BABY BEAR
Designed by Jacqui Whiteley for the exclusive use of Homemade Gifts and Crochet
This newborn sized bear hat is made using the following stitches:
American Terms: Half Double Crochet (Hdc) and Single Crochet (Sc)
or
British/UK Terms: Half Treble Crochet (Htc) and Double Crochet (Dc)
Please note: HDC and HTC are the same stitch as are SC and DC, patterns are written in American or British terms the pattern below is written in American Terminology.
You will need: H/5mm and G/4mm hooks, Dk or Worsted Weight (4) yarn like RedHeart in two colours (looks just as lovely in one colour), A darning needle and scissors to snip your yarn.
The commas separate each stitch instruction unless indicated otherwise. One line was written fully to assist with understanding if new to crochet :)
Main Hat Shape - Newborn
Using the main colour and a 5mm hook
1. Make a magic ring, then chain 2 (this counts as a Hdc), make 7hdc into the ring, slip stitch to join. (8hdc)2. Chain 2, hdc into same stitch, 2hdc into each stitch, slip stitch to join. (16hdc)
3. Chain 2, 2hdc into the next stitch, hdc. * [2hdc into the next stitch, hdc into the next stitch] repeat * around, slip stitch to join. (24hdc)
4. Chain 2, hdc, 2hdc,* [ hdc into the next 2 stitches, 2hdc] repeat * around, slip stitch to join. (32hdc)
5. Chain 2, hdc, hdc, 2hdc, *[hdc into the next 3 stitches, 2hdc] repeat * around, slip stitch to join. (40)
6-12 Chain 2, hdc into each stitch around, slip stitch to join at the end of each row. (40)
13. Chain, sc into each hdc all around, slip stitch to join. (40)
14. Chain, sc into each sc in contrast colour if desired, slip stitch to join. (40)
15. Chain, sc into each sc in main colour if changed for row 14, slip stitch to join. (40)
Weave in the ends to finish off the main part of the hat.
Tip: Hdc is a beautiful stitch when worked in rows and makes a lovely reversible fabric..sometimes you may prefer the other side!
Bear Ears
Using a 4mm hook and the same colour as the main used for the beanie above. Tip: using a smaller hook, creates a firmly fabric, helping the ear to stand properly.
1. Make magic ring, chain 2, make 6hdc into the ring, slip stitch to join. (7hdc)
2. chain 2, turn. Hdc into the same, 2hdc into each stitch. Do not join. Chain 2
3. Turn. Hdc into the next stitch, 2hdc, hdc, 2dc continue pattern to end. Do not Join. Chain one.
4. Turn, sc into each hdc to the end. Chain one.
5. Turn, sc into next stitch, sc2tog, *sc, sc2tog repeat from * to end. Leave a long end to assist with sewing onto the main hat.
2. chain 2, turn.
The ears should be lightly cupped in shape, use yarn markers or similar to help position equally where the ears should be attached. Carefully place an ear on each side of the head, if you have a noticeable seam you may find placing this to a side edge will be less of a visual when placing the ears etc onto the hat. Some people prefer to have this seam in the centre back.
Tip: you can make the beanie without a slip to join at each end of the row, by using a yarn marker or similar you can continue around and change height of stitches without it ruining the design. I would suggest that the last 3 rows of the pattern were made as suggested though to balance the final design. Hope you enjoyed making your hat, below are some suggestions of how you can take this quick pattern and make some quick changes to create totally different looks!!! Happy Crocheting! Jacqui :)
To the right: is the same hat with a stitch variation, each stitch was made into the back loop only, giving a lovely ridge to the stitch. This is the right side.
Here is the hat finished to be used the wrong side up! (The more textured ridge side that was inside..has been finished so it is the on the outside)
Creating fabric like this can be useful for the inside of slippers or for a lovely textured scarf or hat :)
So what did I do with the hat in the end!?! I made it super cute...and all ready for an Easter Baby :) Have fun creating not only the bear hat above but experiment with stitch variation to create something very different!
